Gary Lawrance, NSGC member, architect and gilded age expert, led garden club members and guests on a three-day tour of Newport, Rhode Island. The trip included The Elms, Rosecliff, and the Breakers as well as Green Animals Topiary Garden in Portsmouth. The group enjoyed tea at Blithewold Mansion in Bristol, followed by a guided tour of Blithewold’s splendid gardens and arboretum. In addition to these public venues, the visit featured an in-depth look at The Gardens at Parterre, hosted by homeowner and author Bettie Pardee, who describes her gardens as “in the classical French tradition, designed with an American accent and Newport-inspired details.”
