On one of the hottest dog days of summer, North Suffolk Garden Club members were relieved of all worldly cares as they listened to Dr. Richard Iversen during a guided tour of the magnificent teaching gardens at Farmingdale State College. The long, stately grass pathway bordered by beautifully structured gardens leads to a sundial focal point. Dr. Iversen described his love of vertical plantings to break the sight lines, his use of mirror images to create balance, and his discreet melding of color variations when planning garden design.
The tour’s highlight was to view the recently renovated 1800s conservatory funded by a former student of Dr. Iversen. North Suffolk Garden Club funded four gothic benches for the conservatory’s interior that were given in memory of the late Betty Howind, a devoted NSGC member. Dr. Iversen, who plans to retire in January 2017, will long be remembered by thousands of students who were taught and touched by his love of horticulture.
